It was bad news for many of the top name golfers when Nike announced in August of this year, that they were exiting the golf business.
Big-name Nike golfers like Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Michelle Wie will no doubt quickly get deals with other manufacturers . There will inevitably be a period of difficulty as some of the players migrate from one make of club to another. The big advantage the big name pro golfers will have over us amateur, is that the top golf club manufacturers will be falling over each other to customise the clubs to satisfy the pro golfers’ needs to get their endorsement.
Rory McIlroy has already been seen using the new TaylorMade M2 driver, 3 wood and 5 wood and it will be interesting to see which clubs Tiger and Michelle Wie will use and how quickly they will adapt to them.
Here at the Eat Drink Golf Team, the feeling is that there will inevitably be a short hiatus while the players get used to the feel of the new clubs. However, the view is that in a few months time, many of the players might possibly be playing even better than ever.
Sadly, for those amateurs and club players who currently use Nike clubs we will have to hang on to our cherished clubs for as long as the technology allows us to remain competitive and then consider a change of brand.
We would love to hear your comments on the news and your thoughts about which brand of clubs you would consider moving to – or your thoughts on possibly moving to a custom-made set?
