Danny Willett ready for “special week” at Irish Open.
US Masters champion Danny Willett has confirmed his participation in this year’s Irish Open event at the K Club. Willett, fresh from a superb maiden major win at the weekend, said the event hosted by the Rory Foundation is set to be “awesome “and a “special week”.
The Dubai Duty Free Irish Open will play out at the K Club from 19th-22nd May, and Willett will now be among the headline acts. The star-studded field includes four-time major winner Rory McIlroy, defending champion Soren Kjeldsen, and English duo Lee Westwood and Matthew Fitzpatrick, who both finished in the top twelve at Augusta.
“Rory has done a magnificent job with the tournament, and what he is doing for the European Tour and golf in Ireland in general,” Willett said. “I think with the field we are going to have there, amazing crowds as always and an iconic venue like The K Club, it’s going to be a brilliant tournament. I am really looking forward to making my first appearance in Europe there.”
The tournament will also feature a selection of Ireland’s best golfing talents including former British Open champion Darren Clarke, Graeme McDowell, Padraig Harrington and Shane Lowry, who wrote himself into the history books at the US Masters with a superb hole-on-one on the iconic 16th hole on Sunday.
Willett had admitted that he is now coming to terms with the magnitude of his Masters triumph but believes that he is not yet at the same level of players such as Jordan Spieth, world number one Jason Day, and McIlroy. The 28-year-old will eventually get the chance to defend his title at the 2017 US Masters event, which will be held from 6th-9th April next year.
He added: “I am just going to keep doing what I am doing and ticking all the boxes that I know will improve me both as a person and as a golfer, and hopefully I can get into that position again.”
